Highlights:

- Jovanna showing me some of her favorite spots: Dockweiler Beach in Playa del Rey and Native Foods in Culver City. Sometimes I need a city fix, though the beach was as serene as ever. The sun and ocean air can make you too hungry to even consider taking a premeal photo.

-Knee deep into 5k training, too late to turn back. I talk like it's a marathon, but it's a big deal for me! I never played sports as a kid, so why would I run more than the one mile required in PE class?

Weather + Fashion

I was so happy with the weather just a couple of days ago. It was raining and felt like winter, it was a chance to wear more layers, sweaters and socks. Now it's back to feeling like summer and I wasn't thrilled about it despite how perfect today felt. Here I am looking at the new Steven Alan lookbooks and so suddenly into this warm spell. These looks get me in the spring mood fast. What a roller coaster of weather related emotions.

I'm envisioning spring fashion and if I could pick two outfits to live in, these are it. Throw on a long, airy dress and pair it with a leather pouch. Functional accessorizing. And, I love the idea of the pants suit with strappy sandals and a summer hat! It makes me rethink the suit entirely.

Camellias

My grandma's camellias are bursting with bulbs and blooms. I walked into her yard and did an instant double take. Why does my baby camellia not even have one single bulb? Oh well, I will marvel at hers. When I go to my grandma's, which is really often, I bring my camera and go all Selby on her because there's always a corner, a vignette, something to capture. Today: her garden.

This Reunion

Here's one last holiday dream day. It was a long awaited reunion with Ilissa, Marisa and Jorge. This was my San Francisco family and I was really looking forward to being together again. I even had a cold, but forgot about it because who cares when you're having this much fun. It was right after Christmas day and we went to Santa Barbara for a full day of activities starting with wine tasting.

Next stop: the beach. Marisa and Jorge got their new camera and we had fun making a photo op at every turn.

A warm winter glow.

After dinner at Freebirds, reminiscing about UCSB, and shopping downtown, there was one last stop: the mission!

The more I think about this day, the more I can't help but feel nostalgic. There was a time in life where I lived with my best friend and only a short walk from Marisa and Jorge. Life can change fast. We are getting older and jobs get serious and you never know where a serious job can take someone. Closer? Farther? Who knows. I will stop myself before I get too emo. That's why we have epic reunions. Keep these memories coming.

Into the Woods

So, this day was part of new year's weekend in San Francisco. One of the goals was to make sure we did rejuvenating, restorative, and enlivening things to celebrate the new year. I think we did a good job making sure to set out early across the bridge into Muir woods. The weather was an important part of the day. It was normal foggy when we left the city, but when we got to the woods, it got dramatic. So much fog, and mist, and drizzle. The kind where your face feels cold and damp the whole time, fingertips and lungs chilled. I need this weather every now and then.

We were going to start a hike into the woods, but once we got up to those stairs we started sliding in the mud. It was impossible to go further. We laughed at how unprepared we were for this with toms and booties. Oh well. Let's just observe what we can.

Don't laugh, but the parking lot is really close to all of this since we couldn't go far enough in. It felt like our own world though. There's a lot to see!

It's normal to feel small in nature. Ilissa coined the catchphrase of the day: "small miracles!"

And, so much moss!

This is the type of day I live for.

A Moment in the Cacti

One of my favorite aspects of blogging is chronicling favorite days. It's one way where pictures and words can come together so that moments, memories, and experiences are there to look back on. This was one of those days I want to always have. Jessica, Pilar and I brunching together. It's hard to get together these days because these two spend much of their time living, working, and traveling internationally. And to think at one point we were all living in Berkeley having the time of our lives. After brunch we found Mulholland Drive. It was right there, so we drove. We ended up at a cactus garden! What a great place to land after some aimless driving. It was a perfect setting for a warm Christmas eve day with best friends.

I can't let the holidays go by without so much as a peep here.

These weeks are shaping up to be just as the holidays should - festive and busy, full of excitement and anticipation, taking vitamin C daily so I can stay in top form for all the socializing that takes place. Not going to lie, I got anxious going into the holidays because this time of year means I have almost all of my best friends coming back into town all at the same time which is amazing, but I just wasn't sure how it would all work out between our own family engagements and events and wanting to get together with each other. The good news is that I worry for nothing. Holiday reunions are planned and things just fall into place. I also got to clean my grandma's today in preparation for Christmas day at her house. Sure, it's a chore, but it was a reminder that being back home means I can participate and contribute and help out around here.

A Winter Garden

I have the morning off and am spending a portion of this free time outside. A moment of fresh, chilled air and alone time before the whirlwind that the holidays bring which, for me, starts tomorrow with my work holiday party. Things happening outside right now: a blooming geranium and cotton candy shrub and it's alstroemeria growing season apparently.

Table Project

So, I've been working on a table for the past few weeks, spending a few hours each weekend building what I initially wanted to be a cool salvaged wood table similar to the one in this post. As it turns out, building with salvaged wood was really hard. I brought one piece back from Berkeley and then tried to make it work with a couple pieces that I found at my grandma's and it just wasn't working. I guess I just don't have an eye for that and have to leave that to the pros. Hopefully one day though! So, I did what was easiest: buy all my wood from home depot, make the simplest design possible (four legs and a tabletop), and make it 2ft x 4ft (a manageable size for a small person). I took a few progress shots:

Sawing the wood was probably one of my favorite parts only because I used my grandpa's old saw. He taught me some basics when I was a kid like how to hammer in a nail in two hits. He was the ultimate DIYer and I thought about him a lot throughout the process.

I was a little bummed that it got so cold, but like typical southern california weather, it's back up to the high 70s and I dont have to wait until spring to enjoy scenes like this.

Old Creek Ranch Winery

A rainy Friday spent with Marisa and Jorge in Ojai. The main attraction of the day was wine tasting at Old Creek Ranch Winery which they've told me was something to experience (minus the story of a harrowing bike ride to get there), so naturally I'm game. I've been wine tasting a total of three times before all of which took place in warmer months. This was a whole different feel! It felt like winter. There was a cozy fire in the tasting room, and we were wearing jackets and sweaters and layers. The ambiance was pure cozy.

We ate snacks right outside under a tree protecting us from the rain. It was chilly, but after seven pours(!), I still felt toasty. And then, the cats! Cute and bold and over the top.

A Perfect Sunday

Pretty sure this past Sunday was one of those days that goes into the long term memory file, a perfect day. I was on vacation mode on a quick weekender visiting Dom in San Francisco, the weather was Indian summer warm (actually way too hot for my taste, but looking back now I can hardly remember how grumpy it made me) and there were major plans in the east bay. It all started with the table in this post. It pays to have friends who are on board with project ideas. I brainstorm with Jovanna one day and the next thing you know, we're in Berkeley sifting through salvaged wood and cabinet doors at Urban Ore (as suggested by Jovanna's mom). We came home with a few key pieces of wood. The vision is coming together. Don't hold me to this though. This project is a first for me, so could very easily end up being a scrap project if not executed correctly.

Basically, I want to see more of George Harrison's gardens. I've been reading Living in the Material World during down time. Little bits of wisdom with each page. I don't have hbo so haven't seen the documentary , but my mom came home with the book. Next best thing!

Malibu Gardens

On a drive this weekend with my friend Julia, I found myself at Malibu Gardens. I guess all nursery, garden places are pretty, but this one was so perfect. I think because when you're there it feels more like a backyard or botanical garden or something, not a place to shop. There's a gazebo and benches and tables and places to sit and take a load off. So pretty.

Small garden update: I'm in the process of transplanting a handful of plants that I initially planted in a strip of dirt that only has sun in the summers, but is completely shaded over in the winter. Huge problem. I wish I had realized that earlier, but now that a year has gone by, I know the sun/shade patterns. Now I have a bevy of pots to work with that can be moved and wheeled around following the sun.

This last weekend was filled with many highlights one of which took place with Marisa and Jorge in Ojai for Marisa's birthday weekend. These two really know how to do it up. They've shown me hotsprings in Calistoga before and, now this time, Ojai sulfur hotsprings. It really was everything and more. Surrounded by mountains, amid the end of summer afternoon glow, warm and buoyant, restorative and magical.

Last Sunday in the City

Still reliving last weekend's trip to the bay. This particular day was a special one spent entirely roaming around the city. First venturing to the far reaches of the Sunset to Outerlands which I had to try after hearing about it from friends and blogs.

The wait was long, so pre brunch coffee had to happen as well as lounging in this public parklet.

Food was devoured.

And, good brunch ambiance was enjoyed.

An Afternoon in Big Sur

Before going to San Francisco this past weekend, I was able to spend an afternoon in big sur. I'm lucky enough to have a friend who knows the ins and outs of the area having grown up nearby. We had limited time that day, but made it happen. We got into town and she took me straight to the fog, pulled off at any lookout point necessary for taking it in, and then showed me a place where you can sit in a chair in a river with feet in the water for as long as you need to.

It was a medium kinda pace filled with leisure activities and enough time to recharge especially since this weekend is bookended by trips to San Francisco. San Francisco last weekend and San Francisco next weekend. I feel so connected to the city again.

Weekend Moments

I was brave this weekend and took to the roads not letting driving and traffic stop me. Culver City will likely be my new weekend spot now that my friend Jovanna lives there. We explored her new neighborhood logging every cafe and coffee shop we came across. A perfect day if you ask me. Then today was Santa Monica for more quality time with friends. It was gloomy and overcast just the way I like it.

My friend Danielle just sent me the best package ever: a dinosaur planter with a tillandsia air plant! I didn't know how air plants work, but upon reading more about them here at the Bloominhappy etsy shop, it appears they are so low maintenance. Water them two or three times a week, no soil necessary, keep them in a light space. Done! Thanks, Danielle, for instantly bringing life and humor to my room.

Things I Like

I spent some time cleaning my room on a day off this week. I retired old stacks of things that I keep on the dresser and nightstand to make room for new things and new piles like birthday gifts I was lucky enough to receive last month. Going from the top down: the green jewelry trays from Pilar are electrifying eye candy to me right now, Ilissa has gotten me all of my favorite journals that have taken me through every life chapter, and lastly my cousin got me Banana Yoshimoto's latest - can't wait to get started. Then my grandma let me have this orange dish rag that she's had forever and ever because I like orange. It's a dish rag, but looks like a fine piece of tapestry to me. It's all about surrounding yourself with things you love.

I took the plunge and invested in shoes that I never thought I would ever own: vibrams. After hearing a lecture at work about the benefits of barefoot running, I was intrigued at the thought of a shoe that was more of a protective covering that works with your natural walking pattern than ones that go against it (which is probably like half of the shoes I own). So this is my new daytime footwear. So far it's been a fun experience where walking on unleveled surfaces like cobble stones or similar surfaces is more intense and going into public restrooms feels weird because you think you're barefoot, but not.

I counted how many plants I've purchased in the last year to fill my backyard space and it totaled to about 30! Yet there is still so much cement. Some of the main foliage types like gardenias and camellias are such slow growers. I need instant results.

Sunday funday in Malibu (I mean "the bu") at Leo Carrillo with Marisa and Jorge. Love me some quality time with good friends talking about garden projects, blogging, general catching up. Then we went to the Malibu Mart for a bite to eat and there we saw a Pressed Juicery truck that I remember reading about here on LA in Bloom. So, we topped off the day with a healthy boost. I went with Greens 2 because it had the most veggies that I feel my body is deprived of.

I will be spending a good portion of my morning in the garden repotting, fertilizing, organizing, and weeding. I wanted to take close up pictures of my latest backyard acquisitions (a mandevilla with a trellis, japanese laurel shrub, more lantana), but the auto focus setting on my camera isn't working and sadly I've come to depend on it and don't know how to take pictures without it. Maybe it's time to learn manual.

Umeboshi

I'm incorporating a new food routine into my daily life as of late. My grandma said that my great grandparents ate umeboshi plums with rice nightly and I kind of want to try doing the same because it's fun to take up new healthy habits (not that I'm a health nut by any means - hotdogs are like a food group for me this week). I was also browsing through Alicia Silverstone's The Kind Diet awhile ago and remember that she mentioned the plum and its benefits. Here's what she had to say about umeboshi:

"Incredibly alkalizing to the blood, umeboshi help to buffer excess acidity from white sugar and alcohol and are even helpful against the common cold."

It's here!!

Unrelated note: went to dinner with my family last night. We had a big group of like 12 and my aunt made a comment to the waitress saying that she was so impressed at the waitress' ability to memorize complex orders and said she doesn't need to play sudoku or other brain games to keep her mind sharp. Then the waitress said that she's been at this job for a few years and it's not something that she was very proud of. I felt sad and didn't know how to respond on that moment because it all happened really fast and she was off taking the next order. I guess it's not a big deal, but i just felt sad at that moment knowing people are doing their best and sometimes it's hard to find that sense of pride and reassurance when life goes in a weird direction. Hoping she finds it.

San Francisco weekend was go, go, go but Ilissa and I took a quiet morning walk around her new summer neighborhood in Glen Park. Only two bart stops past my old stop, 16th & mission, yet Glen Park felt so unfamiliar and new. I was definitely taken back by the swank yet charming homes, trees and gardens. For awhile it felt like I was in the Berkeley hills or something, not necessarily in the city.

Then Sunday it was Sterns Grove.

June Trip: San Francisco

I have an upcoming trip to San Francisco this month and feel both excited and nostalgic. Digging through some old photos tonight remembering what life there was like: early twenties, carefree, first job out of college, hardwood floors and bay windows, the challenges and rewards of a new big city. I'm a homebody by nature and sometimes don't think I'm meant to live in many cities in my lifetime like a lot of my friends do with ease (though it would be awesome if I did live in more cities) because establishing life and roots and then moving on and not knowing where you feel home is or where you're meant to be is a long, trying process that I don't think I'm good at. Finally starting to feel more settled with things now though. With this trip, hopefully exploring new places will make it on the agenda ( have to admit that i got really set in my ways and didn't exactly explore, see, try, and do all that i should have while i was there).

Weekend highlights: annual family reunion in anaheim (an event I've missed out on for the past few years because I wasn't living in the area) and a visit to my city's library. Cam town got a brand new library at some point within the last few years and I went to check it out for the first time since being home and have to say I am impressed. I didn't have anything specifically I was looking for, so was kinda overwhelmed in the main library, so I just spent some time admiring the mosaic tile work that was done by an artist in LA (I can't remember who exactly, but I remember reading it in an article awhile ago). The adjacent Friends of the Library store had some good stuff and I came away with a couple gardening books for $2.50.

It's Monday, but I still want to relive some of that weekend magic where my friend Julia and I got up early and drove out to Malibu and made it to the top of Sandstone Peak. The invigorating, life-is-beautiful feeling that results from scenes like this should motivate me to find more trails in my area, but this trail is so perfect with the right amount of challenge for me and the most amazing panoramic views of the ventura county area and the channel islands, I don't feel like looking any further. It's all about Sandstone Peak right now.

Picnic Brunch Day

The highlight of this weekend consisted of going to Silver Lake to meet up with Brandi and Kim for an epic blogger day of picnic brunching at Silver Lake Meadows, Farmers Market strolling, cooling off with gelato, and meandering through the shops that line the neighborhood like the Spice Station (a spot I've always wanted to go into because of its enchanting entryway).

Impromptu jaunts like this one to meet Marisa for dinner in Ojai makes me happy. Why don't I take advantage of the fact that Ojai is a really short drive from me? I think because in the past I've only been to Ojai in the summer when the heat is unbearable and dry. This time everything was lush and green. I've actually never seen Ojai like that before. I think spring is the time for Ojai for those like me that don't do dry heat.

Garden Being

Part of the process of learning how to garden and grow things is all about trial and error. Sometimes plants die on you. I try to do my research on soil conditions and strategically placing them in the most optimal spot of the yard, but some things are unforeseen like one plant thrives and grows so big it takes the sun from smaller struggling plant. Then the transplanting process is another hurdle. I've killed a few, but some are in revival mode like this purple shamrock or hydrangea that is now the size of a straw (major progress).

Weekends like this past one are what I live for. Reunited (finally) with friends in Carmel, eating, hiking in Big Sur, and lots of talking because there's a lot to be said when many members of the group are out of the country almost always and talking is infrequent. I love mini vacations.

New Shoes

I've been really good at spring cleaning, but I've also been sprucing up my wardrobe with a few new items like the pants in a previous post and these shoes that I ordered through Need Supply. I want to invest in some quality pieces that will come with me through many seasons and years and I think I achieved that with these recent purchases. You can't go wrong with simple black pants and these ankle booties that can be worn during spring with shorts and pants in the cooler months.

Spent some time cleaning out old magazines this weekend and came across this piece in Rolling Stone and realized I'm really interested in learning more about Yoko lately. She is an artist in her own right, but I don't know much about her art and music, yet feel increasingly fascinated by her. I think I'm longing for a female hero right now. New Pants

I bought some new pants that were aggressively on sale at anthropologie. This is a rare moment for me as I'm a 5ft tall person (I might even be shorter, but I choose to round up) and pants that don't require hemming are really hard to come across. These fit me like a glove.

The sun came out for the first time in a few days (that was a long stretch of gloom by southern california standards) and I had a friend in town. Bonus. This meant driving along the pch taking in point mugu's majestic beauty, dinner in santa monica and more beach strolling was all happening. Driving on the pch is one of my favorite things thanks to a friend who taught me at a young age that burning gas to relieve stress is not a bad thing. I don't do it often because I feel guilty and don't want to hurt the environment, but I do find it enjoyable from time to time.

It feels like winter right now, but I'm still overdosing on all things spring. More spring inspiration: Rodarte and their "seventies suburbia" color palette. Another thing I want to explore: mixing prints in one outfit like the plaid/print number in the top left shot. I have some things in mind that I never wear and have been saving them for what feels like forever, so maybe it's time to try and style them in new ways, Rodarte ways.

I haphazardly pruned roses last month and luckily didn't do too bad of a job because I got my first blooms of the season. It's here: the first rose. Today is all about cats and dogs and spring cleaning. I love the transition between seasons and this one was a powerful one with a supermoon and all. I'm really into the spring vibe - feeling the sense of renewal, starting afresh, and maybe working on some healthful springtime resolutions like giving up soda or something.

Keepsake Coat

I've been digging around my closet a lot lately probably because it's nearing that time for spring cleaning and I'm mentally logging things to keep and things to go. One of the things I remembered I had was this coat that was my great grandma's (another inherited piece that I know I will treasure forever). I can't believe I forgot to wear it all winter. Next time the temperature dips below 70 degrees, this is what I'll be wearing. I realize I talk a lot about things I find at my grandma's and inherit, but now that I don't live about 5 hours away and only come home on holidays, I'm able to spend as much time at my grandma's as I want. I really value the time I spend talking to her and finding out more and more about family history and turning into a pack rat by keeping every momento I can. I would like to talk about the quality of this coat, but I don't know enough about the craftsmanship behind it. All I know is it feels really luxurious and unlike any coat I've owned before.

One of the highlights from a San Diego trip a couple weekends ago was the botanical garden in Balboa Park. It was a really magical experience especially because it was raining and that just made the whole ambiance that much more refreshing and the plants appear that much more enlivened and happy. It felt like a jungle with thriving ferns and vibrant rare orchids. I'm not a botanical buff or anything, but learning more about flora life is a growing interest. Maybe the new dream job is florist, gardener or landscape architect.

Fall 2011 Fashion Inspiration

There was a lot of the coverage of new york fashion week in blogland, but it was pretty overwhelming, so I didn't pay too much attention until today when I did a quick peek on style.com to see what's in store for next fall. I don't want to jump the gun by talking about fall, but here's what piqued my fashion interest:

Prada's overall decadence, full textures, rich pea greens and burnt oranges, and the lowered waist line ( I still love high waisted everything, but I'm intrigued by how the dropped waist line will be reinvented).

Chris Benz' use of this asymmetrical, witchy hat in his collection is pure perfection. I've been wondering what the new 'it' hat will be and I'm hoping this is the one.

San Diego + Camel Coat

Just got back from a weekend trip to San Diego and feeling rejuvenated and enriched after spending quality time with a best friend. Now that my life consists of most of my friends living in other cities, taking these short weekend trips to spend quality time with them in their cities is what it's all about.

We spent a rainy day in Balboa Park walking around the Japanese Tea Garden and the botanical garden (will further report on the botanical garden later) before heading to Coronado Island.

With the arctic blast that moved in this week, I decided to wear my great grandma's coat that I inherited. For obvious reasons, this coat is really special to me and it reminds me of the fact that clothing really is "timeless". I'm wearing something from someone who was born in the 1800s. It's really amazing that one piece of clothing can carry on through many generations. I wonder what experiences she had in this coat.

Another highlight: I had tea and scones and good conversation with Brandi of Not Your Average Ordinary. Thanks for the extra scones, Brandi!

A little more about the topics:

Getty Moments

My mom, grandma, and I spent some time at the Getty Center this weekend logging some major art and garden admiration time, taking in the views, and soaking in the sun. You know how it goes.

I've been to the Getty a couple times before, but must have glossed over the garden before as, this time around, it was the garden that really left me in that total state of awe.

After soaking in the bigger picture of the garden, I tried to pay closer attention to what was happening in the little microcosms of the garden and found lots of little flora, dainty plant life.

Next we want to try the Huntington Library in Pasadena. Anyone have any other garden recommendations in the area?

The Sketchbook Project

I participated in a collaborative blogger art project hosted by Shannon of Happiness Is... Our sketchbook is a part of the The Sketchbook Project. The running theme behind ours is "Happy Thoughts" and nothing makes me happier than breakfast and the feeling of it being 11am (I've concluded that this is my favorite time of day). So, here is my contribution to our sketchbook. I chose to go with charcoal as my main medium with a hint of paint for color. This was a fun exercise to practice the skills (by skills I mean basic, 101 level) that I learned while taking the most amazing art class at the CCA.

Aside from this being a great experience to practice art, what I took away from this is that even with a common theme behind the project, everyone had their very own unique approach which was really amazing to see. Shannon has been posting three bloggers' works every day this week, so tune in to check out the rest of the project.

First (Big City) Love

As mentioned before, I paid a little visit to the bay area. Though much of the mini trip was spent in Davis and the East Bay, I made sure to spend some quality time with the city that still owns my heart. I don't want to dwell on the past, but it's a city I can't get over. My time there was very definitive - it's where I learned what being a grown up is all about. They say first loves are intense. So, if San Francisco is my first big city love, then I get it; it's seemingly impossible to move on. I love it something fierce.

Jovanna and I spent the day in the mission seeing what new coffee shops opened on Valencia, visiting cozy book stores, and brunch at Tartine. A perfect day.

Today I'm doing a product review for eShakti. This post is a first of its kind for me, so I'm a bit nervous, but here goes nothing...

I first heard about eShakti through Brandi's Not Your Average Ordinary and Tiffany's Dancing Branflakes and was immediately drawn to their array of styles from capes to pants to pencil skirts - they have it all. When given the opportunity to do a product review of my own, I was pretty over the moon.

About the dress: I went with this black, full length, flowing dress because it reminds me of something Stevie Nicks or MK Olsen might wear. At least for me, it's not everyday that I wear a dress at this level of dramatic flare, so I was really excited to step out of my comfort zone and try something bold. Factors I love about this dress include the plunging v-neck with sequin trim, its lightweight and moveable material, and it's a wrap dress with a sash (this embellishes the flowing factor). I think I know what my uniform will be for the remaining winter months.

Styling: Does anyone have any suggestions on what shoes one would wear with this?

My friend, Ilissa, happens to have impeccable and unique style. So, when we were spending some quality bestie time together this weekend in the Bay Area, we had a little photoshoot. One of my favorite aspects of her style is that she includes a lot of vintage, like the hot pink oxfords and gold scarf, and is the only person I know that wears a top hat. Yes, a top hat. Ilissa is a grad student who is very dedicated to helping others through work in the nonprofit sector and manages to achieve great things while looking really fab. I haven't properly said goodbye to 2010 because change makes me feel weird, but it's a time for renewal and I am getting on board by making some resolutions so that the new year has some sort of framework.

It is the first week of 2011 and it couldn't have started in a more exhilarating way: Just got back from a two day adventure helping Mary Jo prep and photograph a shoot for her new clothing line's lookbook. Today: driving up to the Bay Area.

-spending time with every single family member and Christmas at my grandma's
